RTA Mandate for Licensing & Approvals

Section 65 of the Road Traffic Act 2014 provides that the Road Traffic Authority replaces the Superintendent of Motor Traffic and the Land Transport Board in any Act or Regulation.

Under this provision, the RTA has taken over the roles of the Superintendent of Motor Traffic and the Land Transport Board under the following Acts and Regulations:

  • Land Transport Board Act 1968
  • Motor Traffic Act 1950 and Motor Traffic Regulation 1967
  • Licensing of Heavy Vehicles Act 1977 and Licensing of Heavy Vehicles Regulation 1977


In addition, the Road Traffic Authority has the role of the Board in the Motor Car Dealers Act 1976 by virtue of the Motor Car Dealers (Amendment) Act 2017.

From 1 June 2018, the above Acts and Regulations, except the Motor Car Dealers Act, are replaced by:

Road Traffic Rules – Licensing of Drivers 2017
Road Traffic Rules – Registration of Motor Vehicles 2017
Road Traffic Rules – Passenger & Goods Transport Licensing 2017

Road Traffic Rules – Road User Rules
